| 2003 Labor
Day Carnival -
Mas Bands & Steel Pan Preview |
|
| The West Indian
Labor Day parade attracts millions of revelers to Brooklyn's Eastern Parkway
each year, making it the largest one-day event of its kind in the country.
However, if you are one of the New Yorkers that still thinks that the annual
West Indian Labor Day Carnival is only a one-day event, then please read
further. The festivities surrounding Carnival include days of music
concerts, costume pageants, and cultural events which this year includes the
first annual international cricket cup to be held at Canarsie Park in
Brooklyn. See the below flyers for ongoing Carnival related events.
The exuberance shown on Brooklyn's
Eastern Parkway has been building for months in the Mas Camps and Pan Yards
located in the Flatbush and Crown Heights neighborhoods. AfricaSounds
took the opportunity to visit and find out more about one of the vibrant
cultures that contributes to the richness of life in New York.
AfricaSounds found touring the Mas Camps one of the most enjoyable ways to
experience Carnival cultures.
The Pan Yards are where the
steel pan musicians meet to practice the melodies for Panorama, the annual
steel pan contest held Saturday night prior to Labor Day at the Brooklyn
Museum. In the Mas Camps, the costumes for this year's events are on
display and Mas players go be fitted and chose the style they prefer.
Each Mas Camp designs several unique styles following a chosen theme for
each year and many of the costumes are assembled in the camp as well.
