Contrast the Chattel house with a visit to a great house. the Sunbury Plantation house in St. Philip is a 300 year old home recently restored and
refurbished. Its museum boasts a an unrivaled collection of indigenous mahogany  ornately carved furniture, as well as art and rare collectibles.
The grounds are beautifully landscaped and serve as one of the venues in the annual Barbados Jazz Festival.

Liming at Tyrol Cot

Barbados: Tyrol Cot

Tyrol Cot was the home of Sir Grantley Adams, the first premier of Barbados and the only Prime Minister of the Federation of the West Indies. The home is also the birthplace of his son, Tom, the second Prime Minister of Barbados.  The house itself was constructed in 1854 and is an architectural gem with an interesting mixture of Palladian and tropical vernacular. The house has been restored by the Barbados National Trust and is filled with the Adams' antique furniture and memorabilia.  The house is flanked by The Heritage Village, a 'living museum' comprised of a number of attractive Chattel Houses, each of which displays the work of traditional craftsmen and artists. Here you can purchase leather goods, ceramics and pottery, clothing, pieces of art and local confectionery. The traditional 'Rum Shop' serves sandwiches, fish cakes, and of course, world famous Cockspur Rum! Tyrol Cot Heritage Village has quickly become one of the most enjoyed showcases of Barbadian heritage.

Barbados: The heritage Village at Tyrol Cot

Chattel Houses are truly unique to Barbados and like Crop Over were born out of the sugar plantation culture and the African heritage of the slaves that worked the plantation. Distinctly African in design and in the arrangement in Village like configuration and particularly Barbadian in their symmetry - a central door flanked by windows on each side, the unique form was born of the relationship between plantation owner and field worker. 90% of Barbados land was once controlled by plantation owners and after emancipation field
workers rented land from owners. The  Labor Act required workers to remove property from the land if the worker stopped working for that owner. Chattel houses were designed so that they could be collapsed, loaded on to a cart and moved to be reassembled at another location. So after Crop Over or if a dispute arose a worker could move on to work at another location. As owners grew more prosperous additions were added and elaborate wood carving which displayed the status of the owner contributed to the unique Architecture
found in Barbados. Tyrol Cot was the home of Sir Grantley Adams, the first premier of Barbados and the only Prime Minister of the Federation of the West Indies.  The house itself was constructed in 1854 and is an architectural gem with an interesting mixture of Palladian and tropical vernacular.
