Dominica Travel 2009

South & Scotts Head:

Traveling straight to Scott’s Head, we take the road to the south which leads to the southern tip of Dominica. After leaving the bustling streets of Newtown just outside of Roseau, the road winds along a narrow strip of land between the Morne Angais and the Caribbean. It next passes through Pointe Michel, and Soufriere before reaching Scotts Head, an impressive mound of rock jauntily perched and nearly surrounded by water except for a narrow rocky “neck of land that connects it to the mainland.

The steely blue grey of the Atlantic Ocean and the calmer translucent blue-green of the Caribbean are kept apart by that narrow strip and is a dramatic sight from the top. Scott’s Head is also the name of the fishing village connected to it The two are seprated by a narrow strip of land that connects it to the mainland.

Some of the best diving including Champagne reef, named for the rising bubbles from its geothermal vents.

Leaving Scott's Head back on the same road, a stop in the village of Soufriere is warranted. Soufriere is known for its hot mineral baths which have made it a destination for those seeking relaxation.

Grand Bay

To reach Grand Bay and the villages of the southeast coast retrace the road back up to Soufriere and head inland toward the east passing through remote mountainous forest. Grand Bay is a small town known for producing some of Dominica's finest musicians as well as for its participation in the struggle against slavery and European colonial occupation. Our visit was to meet with lifelong resident Phillip "Poppa Chubby" Mark of the Midnight Groovers, for an interview to be published in the future. Vocalist Michele Henderson, Niece of the "Godfather of Modern Creole Music" Gordon, Reggae artists Golden Squad, the Tradibelle Dancers, are other well known artists calling Grand Bay home. The town's website: http://www.grandbayrian.com offers a synopsis is the towns historic struggle against slavery, and details points of interest for the history minded visitor as well as information about local arts and festivals.
