AfricaSounds.com invites you to experience this gallery
by photographer William Farrington. The
photos collected in this gallery catch a fascinating period of
approximately six months during
2001 in which
New York City witnessed an unprecedented surge in live
African music concerts. Many of the
leading performers in African music converged on New York
City and William’s photography acts as fitting
testament to that truly dynamic musical season. What follows is a visual
documentary of those outstanding musical and
cultural events. For
each artist, we have created an individual photo gallery which can be accessed
by clicking on the appropriate thumbnail below.

About
Photographer William Farrington
William Farrington,
a photographer and
reporter for the African Sun Times as well as other
publications, has developed a passion for music from the African continent and Diaspora.
William was trained as a painter thus he views the world in terms of color,
lines, movement and energy, the essential language of painting.
He views a
connection between painting and photography in the sense of composition.
William Farrington's photos capture the dynamics
and energy of African music performance. Successful music
photography
requires an anticipation of
a musician’s movements. The
photographer must watch how the musicians move and anticipate
future movements in order to capture a unique
visual moment on film. William
Farrington is one such photographer that has developed a knack
for putting himself "in the position of the musician" in
an attempt to guess what movement
will come next in the hope of
capturing it on film.
According to William,
one of the most challenging aspects for a
music photographer is
finding and capturing that interaction where
there is a significant musical and physical dialogue going on between
musicians.
