Daara J - Live at globalFEST 2006

[Left to Right:] N'Dongo D, Faada Freddy & Lord Aladji Man

Faada Freddy

A first impression of Senegalese 'hip-hop' group Daara J is that they are performing something entirely unique, that cannot be summed up as 'hip hop'.  First off, the melody is what instantly grabs you and the rhythms had a strong emphasis of the Caribbean (reggae, dancehall and creole elements) as well as Senegalese Mbalax.  Daara J emphasizes melody in their compositions backed up by the DJ with a modern-day beat box.  There is a mixture of reggae, dancehall, roots music, soul, funk, Cuban and of course elements of American and French rap.  There are also elements of Mandingo and Zulu music that the group has borrowed and incorporated into their sound.  It is a heavy, and enticing stew.  And at globalFEST the group Daara J had the audience in the palm of their hand.

On top of the music, this was a very visual act (as witnessed by the photos).  There was a ton of movement on stage, the singers performed their DJ duties in a constant swirl of movement and dance all tied to the intense beats.

We have heard that Daara J and Public Enemy will be sharing the same stage at the Byron Bay Blues & Roots Festival in April.  Also, it is reported that Daara J will be working on a side project with Public Enemy members Chuck D and Brian Hardgroove called Fine Arts Militia. This project, lead by Fine Arts Militia, will focus on the single "Stay Alive Africa".
