Hotel Montjoyeux les Vagues -
“Discover paradise 5 minutes from downtown Cayenne” is the catch
phrase of this newly opened luxury hotel. The Montjoyeux les Vagues
makes for a memorable stay both as a resort destination and a
convenient location for business meetings. All rooms face Zéphir Bay
on one of the country's more picturesque beaches. The hotel is
also located close to the airport, and just a few miles from centre
ville Cayenne. Playful use of bright Creole color and with an
asian motif mark the interior design. The rear of the hotel faces
gardens, a pool and dramatic views of rock formations on the
beautiful sand beach which was deserted the day we visited. The
rooms are wonderful, spacious and lacking no amenities. Each
has a terrace overlooking the water, and for those wishing escape
from the sun there are electrically operated shades.
Amenities include pool, jacuzzi, WiFi, private
parking, and conference room.
A total of 20
studios and 2 Royal Suites.

Auberge des Iles and restaurant, Ile Royale
No one ever escaped from les Isles de Salut
when it served as a prison colony during the 1850s to the 1930s.
The colony was made famous to the world in the movie Papillon.
Now it is an escape
desination. Many of the original buildings are being renovated
including the central building which houses the Auberge des
Isles which previously served as staff quarters. Auberge des Iles,
houses a lobby bar on the ground floor, meals are served on the
verandah over looking Devil’s Island. Our Waitress, Olivia
(pictured above) served us Acoupa, a local fish grilled with a
creole sauce and rice over lunch at the hotel's restaurant.
Also on the menu that day was Boeuf Bourguigon and entres included
soup de poisson or poisson a la Tahitienne. The hotel guest
rooms, formerly staff quarters, are on the second floor. Catamaran
service operates on a daily basis from Kourou, arriving in the
morning and departing in the afternoon. Some local visitors to the
island choose to bring a hammock and stretch it between two palm
trees.
Accommodations are simple yet comfortable and
are room 60 euro
(1-3 people) with terrace 70 euro Hammock room 10 euro.

Moti Koté,
a bed and breakfast
in a charming 19th century house in the heart of the Cayenne,
lovingly restored by owner Jenny Francis. Located on a quiet street
it offers more than its humble exterior lets on. Inside its
louvered wood doors one finds a calm oasis from the vicissitudes of
travel. The rear patio and garden is sheltered from the noise of
the street and comfortable rooms painted soothing colors. This
classic 19th century creole house offers amenities contemporary
travelers expect, WIFi, air conditioning, modern kitchen and laundry
facilities as well as a hammock stretched in the private garden. It
is in a perfect location to take in Cayenne for Carnival or
business, and easy walk to many of the city’s restaurants. It
is a complete apartment and a first floor with totally private
entrance.

A pleasant stay at the best price is the theme
of the Central Hotel in Downtown Cayenne. We found this to be true. As its name implies
the hotel is located in the heart of the city. Its 44 rooms are all
air conditioned and include a daily buffet breakfast. The
friendly staff also make The Central a sensible choice for travels
who enjoy a modest deal. Kitchenette and laundry services are
available for longer term guests.

Its modest storefront exterior houses a charming, two roomed little
restaurant bustling with Kreol charm. we enjoyed a late lunch fresh
Acoupa in a creole sauce, other local specialties on the menu
included Stuffed Kassave, Wood Terrine, Agouti Stew, Crusty Prawns,
and Colombo of Pork. Our hostess was Parcily Yolaine and servers

A truly special off
the beaten path experience, Le Sapotille, is five star cuisine
located in a house in the midst of the rain forest. Known to
most by word of mouth, those who have found it are adventurers.
Arrangements are by reservation. When we arrived after dark a
row of candles led from the side of the road up to the house which
was also lit only by candles. Given the remoteness of the
location, we knew we were in for a special evening and the food did
not disappoint - in fact I can't remember enjoying a finer meal over
the course of our stay in this food obsessed country.
Le Sapotille menu items:
We started with olive oil and freshly baked bread, Shrimp Guianese with a potato and Onion confitte folowed by Civet di Agouti, (a local animal similar to rabbit) with a red wine sauce with fresh herbs and local spices and for dessert Ice Cream with local fruits and caramel sauce or Chocolate Fondue. Dominic was trained in France and before starting Le Sapotille was a chef on the Rennaisance One cruise lines
One can get to
Sapotille by road or boat. Sapotile is located just off the
Saint-Jean road (260 km from Cayenne) just 5 km outside the town of
Saint Laurent Maroni. It is also easily accessed by the Balaté
river close to an Ameridian village.

La Partagas,
centre ville Cayenne, Fr. Guiana. Partagas takes its name from a
factory of cigars in Cuba. The restaurant has existed for five years
and is directed by the couple Guy Paolo and Katia Becker. There is a
brisk air of efficiency in the way guests are greeted at the door,
seated and served that felt familiar to this New Yorker. Later we
were to find that the couple started there careers in New York -
Guy was a chef at BLT. Today, master chef Guy wishes to realize a
new concept which will unite Guianese and European kitchens and his
menu reflects this evolution. Guy also favors presenting food in the
American style signaling his professional training in New York.
We were treated to
an
appetizer of Foie Gras on Brioche with Apricot
chutney with Lentil salad and a Shimp Boullion in curried coconut
milk.

Open air dining room at Ti Pic Kreol's restaurant and Bar, St. Laurent du Maroni, corner of rues Thieers et Tourtet in tghe city center. As we found elsewhere in Guiana a plain storefront exterior belies the rich interior. At Tipic Kreol, settings include garden dining, a patio, and terrace open air beneath the bamboo and palm frond roof or a formal dining room room, and bar. Serving French and the traditional cuisine of west Guiana, the menu features “Jamais Goute” locally caught fish served whole grilled or smoked “a la canne a sucre”, game meats, creole blood sausages and fresh juices. “Jamais Goute” locally caught fish served whole grilled or smoked “a la canne a sucre”, game meats, creole blood sausages and fresh juices.
