African Travel Journal
Photography and Text by William Farrington |
|
|

|
The goal
of this feature is to provide an initial overview of South Africa in the form of a
photographic travelogue, through the eyes of journalist and photographer William
Farrington. What follows is William's thoughts and perspectives from a
trip which took him through the many regions of South Africa. |
|

|
The
following photo diary of William's trip is noted with captions of William's
perspectives during his first visit to South Africa:
"I was
invited as part of a small group of four journalists whose goal was to
witness as much as we could of South Africa in the two weeks that we had.
As a first time visitor to South Africa, I was surprised by the range of
cultures, sites and music styles that I discovered. I also was able to
participate in several important milestones including a World AIDS Day
Commemorations and the opening of the Apartheid Museum, pictured to the left."

|

|
What does
the thought of visiting South Africa bring to mind? South Africa
offers everything from the world's finest luxury hotels, pristine beaches,
unforgettable cultural experiences, warm people as well as a chance to see
firsthand the beautiful wild-life that we have previous experienced through
nature documentaries. |
|

|
Food and
cultures go together. Speaking about the
food, noted culinary writer Jessica Harris stated "South Africa is a place
where the multiple strands of many of the world's cultures are braided into
a complex dish, like a slow simmered stew where each ingredient adds to the
taste yet retains its own unique flavor." |
| |
During my trip, we visited four
regions including Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Gauteng.
You can access each of the four regions photo diary by clicking on the
appropriate region on the map below. Or, you can continue scrolling
and go chronologically through the travelogue.

Map of South Africa |

|
South African is a country with 11 official
languages and many musical forms including Makwenya, Maskanda, Kwaito, Mbaqanqa
and Jive.
Each region that we visited had a distinct climate, topography and culture.

Our tour was organized
by Chris Nkoma of Dithabana Tours. He chose to emphasize these various
cultures of his homeland and he kept us on track via rigorous schedule.
Beginning in Johannesburg, the heartbeat of South Africa where we witnessed
the cutting edge of South African urban culture, to the game preserves of
Mpumalanga, to the traditional Zulu culture of KwaZulu-Natal and on to Xhosa
speaking Cape Town. |
|

|
Chris is a young man who stated that while growing up, at night
he dodged the South African military in his township and during the day he
dodged the partisans who were organizing children for rallies." With
the fall of Apartheid, a young man like Chris now has the opportunity to go
into business for himself. |

|
My goal with this
interactive travel journal is to give you a glimpse of the amazing sites and
sounds that we encountered and to provide information to those who wish to
encounter the same. |
| |
I now invite you to continue with me
on my visit through South Africa, viewing each region, its people, culture
and music, through my photographic lens. I have also included
additional
features on World AIDS Day and a Travel Information Section which provides
information on tour
organizations and lodging. Please click on the specific feature that you wish
